What is it?
What is Affordable Housing?
Affordable housing refers to housing that is economically feasible for very low, low, and moderate income households. The New Jersey Fair Housing Act N.J.S.A. 52:27D-304 outlines key terms related to affordable housing. The Act defines low-income housing as affordable housing to households earning 50% or less of median gross income for a household of the same size in the region. Moderate-income housing is for households earning more than 50% but less than 80% of the regional median income.
What is Random Selection?
How it Works
Applicants that meet the eligibility requirements including but not limited to income are then drawn randomly in a public forum.
Why
The random selection process is a system used to randomly select applicants for affordable housing units in order to fairly distribute limited housing options by giving each applicant an equal chance, regardless of their background or circumstances.
Based on your earnings and the number of people in your household, do you qualify for affordable housing? Using the gross income on the last pay stub of the year or on your prior year's tax return for all household members can act as a loose guide.
