Borough of Leonia Announces Parks and Playgrounds Reopening Plan

Parks and Playgrounds Will Begin to Reopen Beginning June 29

The Borough of Leonia is pleased to announce the full plan to reopen the Borough's parks and playgrounds. The reopenings will occur in stages over the next 30 days. Specific dates, permitted activities and restrictions (if any) are as follows:

Park and Playground Reopening Plan

 

The Borough of Leonia’s parks and playground reopening plan is as follows:

  • June 29, 2020 – 8:00 AM
    • Team Non-Contact Practices Permitted: The following parks will be open for team practices (led by an adult coach, affiliated with a formal organization, i.e. PPL, AYSO, etc.) ONLY:
      • Sylvan Park (lower fields)
      • Station Park (baseball field)
    • Organizations utilizing these fields for team practices must abide by the following guidelines:
      • Prior to utilizing a field, the organization is required to submit to the Leonia Recreation Department its plan to ensure social distancing, use of PPE, sanitization protocols, recording of contact information for contact tracing purposes, etc.
      • Masks are required for all players and coaches when not actively participating in a training activity/in active play.
      • Social distancing is required
      • No sharing of water bottles, phones, etc.
      • Players should keep bat bags, equipment bags, water bottles, etc. separate from one another.
      • Coaches, players and staff only on field; if parents or guardians wish to stay, they must stay in their cars.
      • Organizations should contact the Leonia Recreation Center with any questions regarding what information is needed in order for a permit to be granted.
    • Sylvan Park (Upper Park Area)
      • Entire park remains closed
    • Wood Park
      • Tennis courts can move to doubles play; all other restrictions remain in place.
      • All other areas remain closed.
    • Station Park
      • All areas other than the baseball field remain closed.
    • Fireman's Park (Stanley Gallone Park)
      • All areas remain closed
    • Dudley Allen Park
      • Dog park open
        • Maximum of ten (10) people in the dog park section at one time
        • All users must wear masks at all times
        • Social distancing must be maintained at all times
      • All other areas remain closed
    • C.J. Kirkland Park
      • All areas remain closed
  • July 2, 2020 – 8:00 AM
    • Playground Areas Open: Playground areas in the following park facilities will reopen:
      • Sylvan Park (Upper Park Area)
      • Wood Park
      • Station Park
      • Fireman’s Park (Stanley Gallone Park)
      • Dudley Allen Park
      • C.J. Kirkland Park
      • Anna C. Scott School
    • Anyone utilizing a playground facility in the Borough of Leonia is required to abide by the following guidelines:
      • Anyone older than two years of age utilizing playground equipment must wear a mask, unless doing so would create a health hazard.
      • Parents/guardians/caregivers must practice social distancing at all times.
      • Visitors are strongly encouraged to have hand sanitizer with them, and to utilize it immediately before and immediately after using playground equipment.
    • Wood Park
      • Basketball courts remain closed.
  • July 6, 2020 – 8:00 AM
    • Low-risk and medium-risk sports competitions may resume: Individuals and/or teams may engage in competitions and/or scrimmages (in addition to practices), for baseball, softball and soccer, at the following Leonia Parks:
      • Sylvan Park (Lower Fields)
      • Wood Park (baseball field)
      • Station Park (baseball field)
      • Leonia Middle School
    • Teams that wish to engage in team practices, scrimmages and/or competitions must comply by the following guidelines:
      • If an organization wishes to utilize the field either for a team practice, scrimmage or formal game/competition, the organization is required to submit to the Leonia Recreation Department its plan to ensure social distancing, use of PPE, sanitization protocols, contact tracing plans, etc.
      • Masks are required for all players and coaches when not actively participating in a training activity/in active play.
      • Social distancing is required, to the greatest extent possible.
      • No sharing of water bottles, phones, etc.
      • Players should keep bat bags, equipment bags, water bottles, etc. separate from one another.
      • On-field spectators are limited to a number equal to the number of players participating in the practice or competition (i.e. one spectator per player).
      • Organizations should contact the Leonia Recreation Center with any questions regarding what information is needed in order for a permit to be granted.  
    • NOTE: Football competitions, scrimmages and/or contact practices are not permitted, as the State of New Jersey has deemed football to be “high-risk.” Only non-contact practices are permitted, led by an adult coach, affiliated with a formal organization. No individuals may play football in any Borough park at any time.
    • Basketball Courts Open: Individuals may resume basketball games and practices at the following facilities:
      • Wood Park
      • C.J. Kirkland Park
      • Anna C. Scott School (Outdoor courts only)
    • Individuals participating in basketball activities must abide by the following guidelines:
      • Masks are required for all players when not actively participating in a training activity/in active play.
      • Social distancing is required, to the greatest extent possible.
      • No sharing of water bottles, phones, etc.
      • Players should keep equipment bags, water bottles, etc. separate from one another.
      • No spectators are permitted.
  • July 20, 2020 – 8:00 AM
    • High-Risk Sports may resume: Individuals and/or teams may engage in football competitions and/or scrimmages (in addition to practices involving contact), at the following Leonia Parks:
      • Sylvan Park (Lower Fields)
    • Teams that wish to engage in team practices, scrimmages and/or competitions must comply by the following guidelines:
      • If an organization wishes to utilize the field either for a team practice, scrimmage or formal game/competition, the organization is required to submit to the Leonia Recreation Department its plan to ensure social distancing, use of PPE, sanitization protocols, contact tracing plans, etc.
      • Masks are required for all players and coaches when not actively participating in a training activity/in active play.
      • Social distancing is required, to the greatest extent possible.
      • No sharing of water bottles, phones, etc.
      • Players should keep bat bags, equipment bags, water bottles, etc. separate from one another.
      • Coaches, players and staff only on field; if parents or guardians wish to stay, they must stay in their cars.

These guidelines are subject to revision at any time, based on infection rates, revised direction from the State of New Jersey, or as needed in order to protect the health and safety of Leonia residents.
